1980s, Elle and 25 Years of London Fashion Week

On my travels this weekend, I picked up this DVD of Back To The 1980s. Decade wise, this has to be my favourite era, as I have really great memories of films, fashion, holidays and general good living once leaving school at 16 in June 1985.

In my magazine collection, I have the very first Elle magazine, dated November 1985. In this issue, it celebrates the work of Katherine Hamnett and Azzedine Alaia and also London Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 1986.

Designers showing at London Fashion Week then included Wendy Dagworthy, Mark & Syrie, John Flett, Body Map, John Galliano and Rifat Ozbek.

With London Fashion Week just finishing for next summer, I thought I'd also show some pictures from Elle UK October 2009, which celebrated 25 years of London Fashion Week.

Past and present designers include Vivienne Westwood, Christopher Bailey, Gareth Pugh, Richard Nicoll, John Galliano, Paul Smith and Christopher Bailey.

Its amazing how the time flies and how trends have come full circle to be re celebrated every few season or years. My favourite trend from the 80s was definitely the bodycon look and I love how it is still in style now.

What is your favourite decade for style and fashion?

On balance, I would have to say Seventies. But I'm so very in love with British Eighties designers. Anything after 1985 and I start to get a bit wobbly though, just reminds me of what dreadful taste I had as a kid!! ;)

I can spot some cool pictures there! I sometimes think I'm stuck in the 90s - loved the whole minimalism trend and the - rather unfortunately called - 'heroin chic'. xo

There will always be some crazy clothes. I wasn't in to those big shoulders and big hair. I did like the influence of 'new wave' though.

Ha! I was 18 and left school in 1985, too.
Hated the 1980's, probably because it was so damned tough around here. There was so much poverty and anger here in the Midlands.
The 1970's is definately my era of choice. xxx

Loved seeing those pics from the 1985 Elle edition! I have the 2009 Elle mag as well and loved reading the recaps. I'm with you on the bodycon trend!

What an interesting collection! Can't really select a "favorite" - just like where I am today....seems like much more freedom to create one's own style. (Maybe that's just 'cause I'm "old" and less concerned about what's "in" or "out".)

I couldn't choose a favourite era, but luckily I don't have to! Isn't it funny that the 80s were so taboo not long ago, and now we can look at that period with enough distance to appreciate the good points and forgive the bad ones.

Dear Sharon, I remember that 1985 cover very well. I was sixteen in 1985. I did love the Eighties. I think I like something from every decade but my favourites have to be glam Seventies and Thirties. I love your magazine collection xx

I miss the '80s! At least I miss the styles. I recall a lot of color and creatively-designed clothing that you just can't find nowadays.

That said, I'm obsessed with the '70s when it comes to style, because I think that's when laid-back, bohemian style was the best. But I'm also really into with the very early '80s, when I think you had these ladylike yet unique clothes (especially the dresses) that are widely copied by indie designers to this day.
