MYSTYLE ESSENTIALS: BLACK TAILORED JACKET

Call it predictable or bordering 'boring', but for me a constant style essential is a tailored black jacket. As Michael Kors recently remarked on twitter, 'I truly believe 70% of a woman's wardrobe should be classic, basic pieces'.  I've never been a fan of capsule wardrobes but I do appreciate the significance of having certain style basics in my wardrobe and if I'm a repeat offender of any particular item then it's a tailored black jacket.
Looking back on previous pictures over the years, this is one style essential that is still in my wardrobe, winning over items that continually get turfed out for being out of trend or favour to a new home either via the charity shop, ebay or vintage fairs.
All of my black tailored jackets have been thrifted from boot sales and charity shops and over half of them are vintage or designer too- Stella McCartney, Thierry Mugler, Valentino and Janice Wainwright. The others are either made in France or Italy from wool and crepe, ensuring quality and style. None of them cost more £12 and I wouldn't be without any of them:

Thierry Mugler early 90s black tailored jacket

Made in France black tailored dress coat

Artigiano Italian wool tailored jacket-this was only £1 from the boot sale a few years back!

So hands up- I am guilty of repeat offending on the black tailored jacket front-but quality wins over trends for me any day. What is your main style essential for the coming season?

What a jacket/blazer collection!
They look fantastic on you and I agree with Michael Kors about basic pieces. I also believe that those basic pieces are going to look different in everyone's closet (depending on each person taste).
All of my basic pieces have prints or color on it!

What a wonderful collection you have. I still want the Navy one in the Baukjen clearance, I know how important a blazer is, just don't have one!

I depend on black tailored jackets for work so I am totally with you on them being a wardrobe staple. Where do you shop?? I've never come across a Thierry Mugler or Stella McCartney anything in a second hand store! Your Thierry jacket is stunning! What a flattering cut. And I've love to see your Stella McCartney jacket.

Hi Veshoevius-oops, I should have said it's a Stella McCartney and H&M tux jacket-this was on the £2 rail in my local Sue Ryder as it has a pinhole size ciggy burn on the shoulder and I also got my Thierry Mugler from here too-plus the infamous Ossie Clark dress about 7 years ago! There is a new manager who is eagle eyed on names, so the bargains are a bit more harder to get nowadays!

Oooh, NICE blazers- yes, they are a classic that will never date- they are the perfect addition to any outfit! What lovely finds you have made!!!x

OMG the Thierry Mugler cutout jacket is amazing! It's still a FAB deal for 12 pounds. I don't think you can ever have too many black jackets. I even have a cheapie mass-market boyfriend blazer that I love. But for the last part, yes, I agree: go for the quality and the great cuts. Xoxo

I finally have a black jacket. I have a black velvet one but that doesn't count but it's the first time in about 10 years that I have actually bought a black jacket. It was there, I tried it on, it fitted, it was very well made. Score. Now I've got to get used to wearing one - I don't wear blazer type jackets very often but I'm going to fix that wrong this year. New year, new things to try.

You've done amazingly well again and like you say, the cut and the quality speaks volumes.

A black jacket can so easily be overlooked unless it's an outstanding style or cut like your Mugler - how fantastic is that? Great pieces that you wear so well!

The TM one is especially amazing. I do like a nice jacket - I've owned several but only have a Topshop black one at present. I did find a navy Moschino one in a charity shop a few months ago - I was going to sell it but it fits me now!
