Hi everyone!!
I was browsing the Guardian online fashion pages and came across this article. Titled 'The Thrift Guide-How to stop Shopping', I was intrigued and put off at the same time-who wants more stuff about the credit crunch shoved under their noses?
Anyhow, click on my link to read the whole article if interested. But the main reason I've pulled some of these suggestions, is now winter is drawing in, I no longer have my boot sales to look forward to at weekends and really wanted some alternative things to do, instead of hitting the shops and charity shops all the time. I don't really have hobbies as such, although I do enjoy thrifting very much. Even that gets boring after a while, though.
So, from the list here are some real contenders of how I may spend my spare time:
Knit-Funnily enough, sorting through the cupboards this morning, I came across a bag full of wool (and hopefully knitting needles!). I knitted like mad when I was 16, but after a few jumpers done, the novelty wore off and never returned-until now!
Charity Shops-yes, once in a while, won't hurt-I am contradicting myself, I know!! But I ultimately know, I do need that fix once a week to check out any potential goodies.
Leave your gym-Well, I can't leave it as I never joined in the first place, but getting dressed up warmly and going for a nice, brisk walk sounds the order of the day (not every day, but some!)
Then some of my own ideas, not on the list:
Learn to use my inherited Singer sewing machine-My Ossie is still languishing, waiting to be rehemmed and brought back to its former glory. A year on, I've still not found a decent seamstress to undertake this job-so why not do it myself? The machine needs to come out of the loft soon and a friend has kindly said she will teach me the basics, so I'm looking forward to this.
Crochet-I've always been intrigued by this and may well indulge in learning how to do this too.
Start Reading again-I really enjoyed reading when I was younger, but have never really got back into it again. I think my charity shop trips can fund a few must reads........
Watch DVDs and Videos more often-Now is the time to catch up on that SATC box set-again, or indulge in some kids movies-I love Toy Story and Home Alone!!
Enjoy some of my husbands cooking concoctions-when we are all hungry and bored, we think of some yummy things for Chris to rustle up in the kitchen-he cooks, we eat, I don't need to be in the kitchen, haha!!
Whats your best ideas for passing time-staying in bed all day sounds good too, LOL!!

If you are going to read then join the library the books are free and so are dvds!
Hi Kate-see-thats why I need lovely bloggers like you to put me straight-I need to bring the library card out of hibernation, haha!! thanks for the reminder my dear!
I'll be joining you in learning to sew, I believe. Tried to take in my navy skirt last night and it was a disaster!
I like these tips but I think you should approach the paper to do a feature on thrifting - you're superb at it!
Hi sal-yes, a good thing to learn and another achievement for me- I can't wait!!
Hi always in style-you are always so lovely, thanks for the compliment my dear!
Love reading great books in the fall-winter time. I also spend a lot of my time thrifting, but after SF, I will go shopping for christmas present, so that I dont have to spend all december stressing about it. You should definitely get your Singer going, whish I had one!!
read, watch movies, surf the web...
i tried to pick up knitting last year, lol...but i couldn't get my loops to be straight :(
i totally agree with always in style, that's a great idea. And if i don't have a good book waiting at home, I'm depressed!
such wonderful ideas dear! :)
xoxo,
La C
Leave your gym? No, no, no. If you've joined one, it's important to stay in shape, for your health's sake!
Hi Silje-yes, xmas shopping for me is a priority too! I'll just have a teensy budget for thrifting these next couple of months, haha!
Hi savvy-I'll ditto that!!
Hi ren-I hope I remember to knit properly after all these years, LOL!
Hi fashion herald-thats so kind of you! I need to take a trip to the library soon!
Hi lacouturiernyc-thanks a lot!
Hi wendy-I suppose because I have a manual job on my feet, I class that as my exercise, along with a long walk every now and then!
I adore reading and especially in autumn/winter )
Hi Sharon Rose,
Thanks for visiting my page and for your well wishes:-)!
Hi! Having some hobbies is really nice, I'm sure that you will find something that interests you! There are so many different things to try! Going to a gym can be fun, but going with a few friends is even better! Maybe there are some gymnastics courses or something? I go to one and it's really fun!
And reading is great too! I can give you many tips if you like! I plan on doing a few book reviews too!
Oooh and watching films.. It's one of my favourite activities!
Hi angel-I agree, I need to get back into it!
Hi honeychildsstyle-soo welcome and thanks for stopping by too!
Hi cate-yes, I just need to make an effort, I think I will indulge more in reading, watching films, walking and learning to use my new sewing machine!!
I've always wanted to learn to knit, might have to ask my mom to attempt to teach me! I have phases of reading too. Sometimes I will devour books like mad, other times I can go for months without reading anything at all.
Hi winnie-yes, reading is like this for me too, but I will definitely check out the library sometime soon!
The best way to pass time is to stay in bed and relax, watch an old movie and enjoy the company of my man!! Just don't get any better than that for me!
Hi budget chic-minus kids for the day, this is an excellent idea, LOL!!
great ideas - losing the gym membership is something i did over a year ago, and do not regret! MUCH rather take walks, do yoga at home , go swimming, sauna-ing (big in austria, not so in the UK?) or have a massage once in a while. i like listening to books on CD, watching DVDs, and lying in bed reading for hours, of course. baking and having friends over to devour the results is fun, but my big dream is to have a monthly soirée in which a topic or piece of literature or art is up for (non-serious) discussion, fueled with lots of wine and cheese!
Hi Karima-I love the idea of more swimming and saunas, but nowhere near me. A lot of people have monthly book clubs, discussing the latest book they are in to and combining it with wine and food, maybe you can persuade your friends to have one!
